POLARSTEM Cemented and Cementless Hip Stems

Orthopaedic reconstruction products for Hips

Product Information

The POLARSTEM has been clinically used since 2002 and is based on a philosophy that has yielded excellent clinical results in the last 25 years. The simple surgical technique leads to reproducible results and allows implantation using both conventional and minimally invasive techniques. It can be used for all standard femoral morphologies. The range of stems allows the implant to be matched to all bone sizes, thereby reproducing the natural hip architecture.

The non-cemented POLARSTEM range includes 12 standard femoral stems with a CCD angle of 135° and 10 lateral femoral stems with a CCD angle of 126°. All non-cemented implants are coated with an open-pored titanium plasma/HA coating.

The highly polished cemented POLARSTEM range includes 9 standard femoral stems and 8 lateral femoral stems.

Design and Technology

Design

Reinforced proximal section

  • Improves metaphyseal stability, assisting in prevention of stem subsidence

Shorter and narrow distal section

  • Provides ease of insertion and stem positioning
  • Reduces the risk of thigh pain and stress shielding

System

Product portfolio

  • Standard and lateral version available

Instrument set

  • Simple and user friendly instrumentation for all surgical approaches

Offset

  • Offset of the lateral stems is increased by 3.5 mm compared to the standard stem to better reconstruct the hip biomechanics
  • The lateral stems also have a varus deviation of 2.5 mm in relation to the vertical stem axis to better restore the anatomy and to stabilize the muscle tensor fasciae latae

Surface structure

Prevention of subsidence

  • Beveled, end-to-end grooves perpendicular to the load axis for optimal load distribution

Increased rotational stability

  • Distal grooves are in reverse to the rotational axis

Coating

Excellent primary stability and accelerated osseointegration. The stems are coated with high grade, open-pored pure titanium applied by vacuum plasma spray.

A hydroxyapatite layer is applied to the open-pored titanium plasma coating in the same process step. The result: excellent adhesion.

Indications

The POLARSTEM Standard and Lateral Femoral Stems with Ti/HA are indicated for:

  • Advanced degeneration of the hip joint as a result of degenerative, post-traumatic or rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Fracture or avascular necrosis of the femoral head
  • Failure of previous hip surgery: joint reconstruction, internal fixation, arthrodesis, hemiarthroplasty, surface replacement arthroplasty, or total hip replacement
  • All forms of osteoarthritis
  • Patients with hips at risk of dislocation
  • Femoral neck fracture or proximal fracture to hip joint

The POLARSTEM Standard and Lateral Femoral Stem with Ti/HA is intended for single use only and is to be implanted without bone cement.
